The Long Version

I was born in Labrador, NL Canada in the early 80′s to couple of music loving parents.  I was moved out of there by 83 to small town Ontario where I lived until I was 20.  I have had an eventful life with both happiness and tragedie becoming a familiar friend. As a child I was an athlete.  I was a competitive gymnast which took up much of my time.  I moved on to competitive figure skating which had me at the rink by 5am each morning working towards goals of jumps and spins of determination.  I then became aware of the changes in my mind and interests when at thirteen I had the dilemma of deciding if I was a jock or a freak!  I shaved my head and left figure skating for mosh pits and mixed tapes.  I began to write poetry and draw pictures to make sense of my changing world. While my friends were listening to AM640 I was discovering Jello Biafra, Bad Religion and Black Flag.  My world was turned upside down after attending my first live music show at 12.  The chaotic madness was the answer I was looking for, unabashed creative expression…I was home.  My older brother Geoff was my pioneering icon, he steered me into the world of punk rock and what was cool and what was not.  He also lead my way straight to the guitar.  I would attempt to make noise on his inexpensive electric guitar as early as 10.  It was not until my mid teens did I myself learn how to properly play the instrument.

I was fond of drawing and painting in which I turned all of my attention to in my teens. I applied to fine arts program at York University and was accepted only to defer my position. My brother died that year (2002) forcing my youth into a direction of confusion, despair and quick decisions.  After a quick 32 day bicycle ride thought the states I decided I wanted to go back to Newfoundland.  So, I did. This is where my songwriting and performance abilities collided.  In five years I was in two different bands.  Madman Orchestra and The Firewires. I basically learned the ropes playing shows on George St and a couple small tours. I recorded my Debut Solo album Devil’s of Pride, worked as a promotions personality for 97.5 K-Rock.

My earlier dream to pursue visual arts presented itself upon my acceptance into NSCAD University in Halifax, NS.  After three years of making art and a top 20 Placement on Canadian Idol I decided that in order to focus on music, I would have to do just that….focus.  After deciding to committing my life to music I returned to Peterborough, Ontario where I reside now.

I am pursuing my career as a music maker and performer like never before.  I am applying the same fervor as I had all the mornings I spent at the rink as a child…determined and unwilling to take no for an answer.  I  now have two music videos, a couple of DRB songwriter and singing awards and I have just released my newest five song EP recording Dove and Dagger.

For the last 2 years three other fabulous and amazing musicians make up my band.  Denis Goggin is the lead guitar player, P.J LeConte is the Bass player and on Drums is Doug Hewie.

We have played 250 shows as a band and we are about to embark on our second tour as a band traveling the East Coast of Canada.

Thank you all who have supported this musical journey in any way at all.

Lindsay Barr
